Montakarn 2015 Angel Share

I was first introduced to Montakarn three or four years ago thanks to a family friend who resides not far from the Black Sage Road. Back then, I believe they only had three wines on offer: the Tippy Toe Chardonnay, the Bella Nola, and the Angel Share, which quickly became one of my favourite Okanagan wines.

The name of this blend refers to a wine makers' expression; when wine is aging in a barrel, there's a small amount that will naturally evaporate. This lost wine is known as the "angel's share."

I love this wine for several reasons, but I'm fairly certain one of them is feeling like one of the first people to discover this winery. Another reason is that this was the first wine I ever deliberately cellared (on the advice of the winemaker, of course) — it made me feel like I was finally developing a true appreciation for wine. And lastly, if rather obviously, I love its flavour.

There's something almost herbal about the nose on this wine, some notes of eucalyptus or pine, like a walk in the forrest. Its' smooth, fresh, and very lightly oaky. And at a price point only a couple bucks over the $20 mark, it's a perfect weekday wine — just don't forget to chill the leftovers (if there are any) and take them out of the fridge a couple hours before drinking again.

Unfortunately, at this time there's not much evidence that you can purchase Montakarn's lovely wines anywhere other than their beautiful estate, but for that reason, I urge you to put them on your bucket list. Any trip to the Okanagan should have a well planned list of winery visits, consisting of a nice mix of old favourites and new gems recommended by your favourite thirsty writers.

Unlike many wineries in the area, Montakarn appears to stay open to the public through the harvest season, so if you're in the Oliver area over the holidays, pop by and grab a few bottles to share with friends and family. If memory serves (because their new website isn't fully functional yet and I can't confirm), the Penticton Wine Info Centre may also carry a selection of their wines, as well as many other fan favourites from the region — and they're open year round, too!
