8th Generation 2014 Cabernet Merlot

Sometimes, I'm just too excited to crack open a particular bottle of wine and I forget to take a photo, hence the artfully placed wine glass in my more recent posts. Age is somehow making me more impatient, when the opposite is supposed to be true...

I should have gotten this post up a few weeks back when it was still cool enough to properly enjoy a rich red, but that clearly didn't happen. I had just gotten back in town after a four-day press trip eating and drinking my way through northern Washington state (it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it) and I desperately needed to unwind.

I popped into a private liquor store next to the River's Reach Pub in New West knowing that they'd have a good selection of BC reds for me to choose from. At first glance, this liquor store seems like it would only have the basic off sales desired by pub patrons looking to keep the party going at home, but it's some much nicer! Heck, I complimented the selection to one of the employees and he gave me a little tour of some of his favourites. Just delightful.

Back to this wine: 8th Generation Vineyard is a winery my folks brought me to over Labour Day weekend and I was not disappointed. In addition to their lovely tasting room, there is an outdoor tasting bar, which was serving up samples of Okanagan cheeses the day we stopped by. Not a bad way to pass an afternoon. They're located between Penticton and Summerland along Highway 97, please stop by if you're in the area.

Since I was looking for something warm and comforting, I went with their Cabernet Merlot blend — not a blend I usually gravitate towards, but I had fuzzy memories of taking home something similar (along with their Confidence, a gorgeous Prosecco-like rose) when I was last there. This is a great expression of classic combination: the structure of the Cab goes so deliciously well with the juicy red fruit of the Merlot. At the winery, a bottle will set you back $22. At the store near me it was $26.95 after taxes and deposits, but hey, treat yo self.
