Kismet Estate Winery 2015 Karma Red Blend
I promise I finished it over two days |
The Dhaliwal family emigrated to Oliver 20 years ago and have been growing fruit, which they sold to other wineries, the entire time. Now they're showcasing their efforts and welcoming wine lovers to their beautiful estate, Kismet.
I sampled roughly five wines in their tasting room, but it was the fifth winery I'd been to that day and my tasting capacities were greatly diminished. It might seem like a treat to have your retired father chauffeur you, your mother, and your friend around the southern Okanagan Valley for the day, but if he's anything like my father, it becomes a numbers game.
You see, my dad's wine savvy friend gave him a list of wineries he wanted me to try, but unfortunately, said friend ended up in hospital and couldn't join us that weekend. So my father took to this list with gusto, clearly bent on achieving as much as possible in one Sunday, regardless of the fact that our livers and tastebuds could only reasonably handle so much.
Needless to say, by the time we reached the juncture of Okanagan Highway and Road 20 and saw their sign hailing us, it truly did feel like kismet. It was our destiny to linger on the patio of their adjacent restaurant, the Masala Bistro, snacking on savoury vegetable pakoras and some much needed chai tea.
When I returned home a few days later and saw that I'd rather hastily grabbed a bottle of Karma, Kismet's blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. I had no clear memory of how it tasted, but a long Monday was begging to be rounded off with a big glass of red and a few episodes of the Handmaid's Tale. This blend was well-rounded and satisfying, pairing perfectly with the onset of crisp fall evenings. I had to actively persuade myself not to pour a third glass.
